Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has recently used his social media platform to criticize former President Donald Trump’s fiscal and economic policies in a series of posts.
On July 31, 2025, Hoyer stated: “Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill was never about fiscal responsibility. It is about delivering tax breaks for the richest 0.1% of Americans and cutting programs that make life affordable for hardworking Marylanders, including public transportation services.”
The following day, August 1, he addressed the latest employment figures by writing: “With only 73,000 jobs added to the economy and unemployment rising to 4,2%, today’s #JobsReport is a result of Trump & his disastrous policies.
As the economy faces new uncertainty, American families will continue to see costs increase as Republicans pull the rug out from”
Later on August 1, Hoyer posted another critique: “Trump has enabled DOGE to waste over $20 billion of American tax dollars.
We must keep working to hold Trump, Vought, and their DOGE cronies accountable as they undermine the federal government’s ability to deliver for the people.”
Hoyer’s remarks reflect ongoing political debates regarding federal spending priorities and economic policy. He has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
