Steny Hoyer, a longtime U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district, used his social media platform on September 5, 2025, to criticize former President Donald Trump’s policies and actions regarding American manufacturing, crime reduction efforts in Washington D.C., and the deployment of U.S. troops.

In a post made at 16:15 UTC, Hoyer commented on recent economic data, stating: “The August jobs report reveals that the ‘short term pain’ Trump claimed would boost American manufacturing has done the opposite. His sweeping tariffs are stalling manufacturing employment & causing long term job uncertainty & increasingly higher costs.”

Later that day at 17:42 UTC, Hoyer addressed law enforcement actions in the nation’s capital, writing: “We all want to reduce crime. But what Donald Trump is doing in Washington D.C. is not about reducing crime – it’s a show of force against his political opponents and a loyalty test for his coalition.”

In another post at 20:35 UTC, Hoyer referenced the events of January 6 and recent troop deployments: “Trump refused to send the National Guard to defend the U.S. Capitol against violent insurrectionists on January 6 and later pardoned them of their crimes. His recent deployment of U.S. troops in our Nation’s Capital is nothing short of hypocritical.”

Hoyer has served in Congress since 1981 after replacing Gladys Spellman and previously held positions in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate from 1967 to 1975. He was born in New York City in 1939 and currently resides in Mechanicsville. Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
