Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, posted a series of tweets on January 11, 2026, addressing his recent retirement announcement and condemning an arson attack in Mississippi.
In the early morning, Hoyer informed followers about his appearance on Fox5DC’s “On The Hill,” stating: “I’m about to join @FitzFox5DC on @fox5dc’s On The Hill this morning around 8:30 a.m. to discuss my last term in office and news of the day. Tune in: https://t.co/hpwA5R0anx” (January 11, 2026).
Later that morning, he followed up with another post reflecting on his participation in the broadcast and reiterating his commitment to public service: “Great to join @fox5dc this morning to discuss my retirement announcement and how I intend to continue serving the American people during this critical moment.” (January 11, 2026).
That afternoon, Hoyer addressed a violent incident at a synagogue in Mississippi: “I am horrified by the arson attack on the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi. While I am grateful that no one was killed, this targeted attack was a manifestation of the hate & menacing violence Jews have endured for millennia. Antisemitism endangers our entire” (January 11, 2026).
Hoyer has served as Maryland’s representative since replacing Gladys Spellman in Congress over four decades ago. He previously held positions in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature before joining Congress. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
