Steny Hoyer, a seasoned congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district, recently shared his thoughts on various pressing issues through a series of tweets. Hoyer, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981, used his platform to discuss concerns ranging from tax filing services to potential local impacts of federal decisions.

On April 22, 2025, Hoyer highlighted the importance of efficiency in government actions, specifically criticizing the Trump Administration’s approach to tax services. In his tweet, he stated, “If the Trump Admin cares about efficiency, they ought to protect access to the IRS’s free, easy-to-use tax filing service.” He referenced a letter co-authored with Senator Warren, questioning the administration’s decision to cut the Direct File service, which reportedly saved the average user $160 in tax preparation costs in 2024.

The following day, on April 23, 2025, Hoyer expressed concern over potential budget cuts by the Trump Administration and their impact on vulnerable populations in Maryland. He mentioned discussions with local leaders regarding these cuts’ implications in his tweet: “This is serious: Local leaders have told me that Trump’s cuts could lead to evictions and child hunger across Maryland.” He referred to his conversation with Sandy from LifeStyles of Maryland, Inc., to underscore the severity of the situation.

Later on April 23, 2025, Hoyer also praised Senator Durbin, indicating strong support for the legislator’s role in Congress. Hoyer described Senator Durbin as “a model legislator, a principled leader, and a gifted consensus builder.” He expressed confidence that Senator Durbin’s legacy of accomplishment would continue to grow in the 119th Congress and beyond.

Steny Hoyer, now 83, continues to reside in Mechanicsville, Maryland. His educational background includes a BA from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.
