Steny Hoyer issues statements on DRP departures and Republican-led government shutdown

Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has recently issued a series of statements regarding the impact of the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP) and the ongoing Republican-led government shutdown.

On September 30, 2025, Hoyer addressed federal employees participating in the DRP: “My full statement regarding the last day of service for federal employees who took the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP): https://t.co/8yZ5r8FWSj https://t.co/arkTvXD0CN”.

The following day, October 1, 2025, he commented on the political situation in Washington: “My full statement regarding the Republican government shutdown: https://t.co/QBMrvv6nKc https://t.co/eX9qHg7QNP”.

Later that same day, Hoyer posted about the effects of recent federal policies on his constituents: “The Trump Administration’s policies have devastated thousands of federal employees & families in Maryland. Republicans’ government shutdown will worsen the ongoing crisis. Team Maryland is ready to work, ready to reopen government & end this health care crisis. It’s time for https://t.co/W0TA12oBjR”.

Steny Hoyer has served in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously held positions in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. He was born in New York City in 1939 and currently resides in Mechanicsville. Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland, College Park and Georgetown University Law Center.
