Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, recently shared a series of posts reflecting on the loss of a colleague, commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day, and highlighting his environmental advocacy.
On April 11, 2026, Hoyer expressed condolences for the death of former Congressman Eliot Engel. He wrote: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend, former Congressman Eliot Engel, whom I served with for 32 years. Eliot’s service to his constituents – & his beloved home borough, the Bronx – never wavered as he worked to protect our national security while upholding the”.
Three days later, on April 14, Hoyer joined in observing Yom HaShoah. He stated: “Today I join Jewish communities around the world to observe Yom HaShoah in remembrance of the 6 million Jews killed in the Nazis’ horrific genocide. It is up to all of us to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust doesn’t fade from history but instead helps shape a better, more”.
Later that same day, Hoyer was recognized for his work supporting local environmental initiatives. He posted: “It was an honor to be recognized by the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association for my work to combat the challenges that our beloved St. Mary’s River and its ecosystem face. I look forward to continuing our partnership to support a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable St.”
Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
