Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, reflected on his long tenure and recent activities in a series of posts on April 17, 2026. Hoyer highlighted his service on the Helsinki Commission, participation in a groundbreaking ceremony at the University of Maryland (UMD), and concerns over proposed Republican budget cuts.
In a post from April 17, Hoyer described his experience with the Helsinki Commission as pivotal: “Serving on the Helsinki Commission was one of the defining chapters of my 45 years in the House. As I gathered with past and present Members & staff of the commission, we were reminded that democracy’s survival is never inevitable; it requires vigilance, cooperation, courage,” he wrote.
Later that day, Hoyer shared his involvement in supporting advanced research at UMD: “It was an honor to join the groundbreaking for the new ARLIS facility at UMD. I was proud to secure federal funding for advanced research infrastructure at UMD and am thrilled to see quantum computing initiatives expanding. I look forward to the exciting discoveries that will” he posted.
In another message posted on April 17, Hoyer criticized Republican efforts regarding federal programs: “Republicans continue to slash programs and protections that ensure our elections are secure and protect Americans from scams & higher costs for services they need. @democrats-appropriations.house.gov will keep standing against their efforts to leave hardworking Americans”.
Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate between 1967 and 1975. Born in New York City in 1939, Hoyer resides in Mechanicsville and holds degrees from both the University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
