Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, posted a series of statements on his social media account addressing federal operations, the future of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), and recent policy shifts regarding Ukraine.
On September 24, 2025, Hoyer reaffirmed his support for BARC in the face of potential closure by the Trump Administration. He stated, “Team Maryland is firm in our commitment to keeping BARC open despite the Trump Administration’s efforts to shutter the center. We will continue standing up for the agricultural community and the American people they serve.”
The following day, Hoyer addressed changes in former President Trump’s stance on Ukraine. He shared, “My full statement on Trump’s shift regarding Ukraine:” with a link to his complete remarks.
Later on September 25, Hoyer criticized actions taken by OMB Director Russ Vought concerning federal employees. He wrote, “Those who want the government to stay open & operating don’t threaten to purge the very people who make it work. OMB Director @russvought’s memo is part of his shameful campaign to vilify and traumatize federal employees, who serve our nation every day.”
Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, he holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
