Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has spent months pushing strong COVID-19 restrictions, but she felt it was fine to attend a Black Lives Matter protest amid a pandemic.
Bowser is seen in a video from WUSA addressing a massive number of protesters surrounding her.
“Welcome to Black Lives Matter,” Bowser shouts as the protesters cheer. “It is so wonderful to see everybody peacefully protesting.”
Bowser called Washington, D.C. “the people’s house.” She said more justice and peace was needed and urged people to speak up loudly.
“So today, we push the Army away from our city,” Bowser said during the protest. “Our soldiers should not be treated that way. They should not be asked to move on American citizens.”
Bowser took her mask off to deliver her speech, but she was still surrounded by hundreds of protesters.
Bowser has been pushing strong COVID-19 restrictions on Washington, D.C., such as discouraging tourism and travel, saying that anyone traveling to the district from another state that has more than 10 cases per 100,000 people must get tested within 72 hours of coming to the district.
She also wants anyone who is visiting and is there longer than three days to be retested.
