ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH: Weekly Health Update – What's going on in schools and hospitals?

Healthrecap

Anne Arundel County Department of Health issued the following announcement on Dec. 17.

Welcome to our Weekly Health Update. The COVID vaccines are safe and effective, and they’re our path out of this pandemic. Over 71% of the county has gotten at least one dose, with 65% fully vaccinated. COVID is spreading and is affecting our schools, hospitals and holidays.

What’s going on in schools?

With a high case rate, we’re seeing more children getting Covid and getting sick. Cases in schools are rising, and more kids are being quarantined. For 12-17 year olds, over 80% have gotten their first dose. For 5-11 year olds, over 30% have gotten their first dose, and we haven’t seen any reports from the CDC of unexpected side effects. If you haven’t gotten your child vaccinated, please do so now. Also, if your child has only had one shot, and it’s been more than 3 weeks, get them their second vaccine dose now.

What’s going on in hospitals?

Hospitalizations are rising as Covid spreads. It’s stressing our hospital staff as the number of people needing care continues to increase. We’ve relied on our nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals to take care of us. We have to do our part to be there for them. We all have to use our existing tools to prevent and treat Covid.

• Get your vaccine or booster.

• Wear a mask in public settings, whether you’re vaccinated or not.

• If you’re sick, stay home and get tested.

• And, if you do get Covid, and you have any health conditions, get monoclonal antibody treatment.

What should I do over the holidays?

With Covid spreading and people traveling, here are some specific steps to prevent the spread of Covid:

• Have everyone test before a family gathering

• If you’re using public transportation, wear your mask at all times.

• And of course, get your vaccine

We’re in a precarious moment. While our hospitals and schools work through how to manage the sharp rise in cases and hospitalizations, we each have to do our part to help them out. That’s what we do as a community, we take care of each other.

Stay safe and be kind to yourself and others. We’ll see you next week.
