In April 2022, the Maryland General Assembly passed a mandatory statewide paid leave law, overriding a veto from then-Governor Larry Hogan. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) had opposed the legislation and supported Hogan's veto, advocating against it in Annapolis and through media channels. The new mandate is set to take effect next year as the state works on implementing the Family And Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program.

On July 6th, NFIB hosted a virtual event titled “Family & Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) for Maryland Small Businesses.” State Director Mike O’Halloran provided an overview of the FAMLI program, its implementation process, and what small business owners can expect.

NFIB members have an opportunity to influence the Maryland Department of Labor’s FAMLI division by participating in an Ad Hoc committee. This committee aims to develop a program that benefits both employees and employers through insights from various industries. Participation involves attending one-hour virtual meetings every other week for several weeks.

Interested parties are encouraged to join NFIB Maryland’s FAMLI Ad Hoc Committee by contacting Grassroots Manager Julianna Rauf. A few seats remain available for those who wish to contribute their business experience and perspective.

The webinar recording can be accessed via NFIB’s Maryland Paid Leave Law Video link.
