The Baltimore Museum of Art, B&O Railroad Museum, Everyman Theatre, Maryland Zoo, and The Walters Art Museum have launched an initiative to promote sustainable practices on World Environment Day. On June 5, participants can engage in various eco-friendly activities and receive incentives such as free or discounted admissions and gift cards.
The Baltimore Museum of Art offers free admission to the Black Earth Rising exhibition for those who bring three clean plastic bottles. The B&O Railroad Museum provides free admission to individuals participating in a trash cleanup event at 10 a.m. Everyman Theatre gives a $10 gift card to visitors who donate craft supplies or artist tools. The Maryland Zoo grants $20 admission for those recycling small electronic devices. At The Walters Art Museum, showing a recently used CharmPass will earn visitors discounts at the Walters Cafe and the Museum Store.
This initiative began in summer 2024 when the BMA formed an Eco-Challenge coalition with civic and cultural organizations aiming to reduce their environmental impact. Each organization committed to making operational changes to lower their carbon footprint and creating programs to raise climate change awareness in 2025. The National Aquarium and Maryland Zoo contributed expertise on sustainable practices, while BGE and the City of Baltimore offered resource information.
Participants in this initiative include various local entities such as the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore Convention Center, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, Living Classrooms Foundation, National Aquarium, Visit Baltimore, among others.
The effort aligns with Visit Baltimore's designation of 2025 as the Year of Sustainability.
