Steny Hoyer addresses disability rights, student achievement, and economic policy in recent posts

Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, recently addressed issues ranging from housing discrimination to youth achievement and national economic policy in a series of social media posts.

On July 17, 2025, Hoyer highlighted challenges faced by people with disabilities in accessing fair housing. He wrote, "Housing discrimination is one of the most significant obstacles that the disabled community faces. We must restore funding to fair housing programs & government services for people with disabilities to live with greater dignity, independence, & equality."

The following day, July 18, Hoyer recognized a local student for her achievements during Black History Month. He stated, "I was glad to meet Amahyree Wells, the #MD05 Black History Month Essay Contest 2025 winner. Amahyree's writing was engaging and reflective. I commend her ability to connect racial justice & economic fairness in her essay on the impact of Black Americans in the workforce."

Later on July 18, Hoyer commented on recent political developments regarding national economic policy and public safety. He posted, "Trump's promises to lower costs and keep America safe have proven to be a joke. House GOP's latest cuts do nothing to affect the rising prices at the grocery store, and in fact make our people less safe."

Hoyer has been a member of Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, he holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
