A 15-year-old student was apprehended with a loaded firearm at St. Charles High School on April 29 after school administrators and the school resource officer were alerted to the possible presence of a weapon. According to the statement, as the officer and an administrator began searching the student, he attempted to flee but was quickly detained. A loaded semi-automatic Polymer 9mm handgun without a serial number—commonly called a “ghost gun”—was recovered from his waistband.
Authorities also found that the student had a vape containing THC in his possession. The Charles County Department of Juvenile Services was notified in accordance with Maryland law, and charges will include possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, minor in possession of a firearm, possession of cannabis, among other related offenses. An investigation is ongoing to determine how and why the student obtained the firearm.
