Takoma Park officials announced on Apr. 9 that six new benches have been installed in front of the Community Center as part of a partnership with Art For The People, a local non-profit organization.

The project aims to highlight the importance of protecting the environment while providing functional public art for community members. Each bench is designed as a unique piece of art, carrying messages that encourage support for city environmental laws.

Art For The People focuses on bringing art education and projects to communities with limited access to creative opportunities. According to the organization, it serves children in family homeless shelters and at festivals, teens who are at risk or developmentally disabled, seniors, adults in shelters, and families involved in correctional programs. The group matches artists who are also experienced teachers with individuals who may not otherwise have access to art-making experiences.

The collaboration between Takoma Park’s HCD/Code Enforcement Division and Art For The People reflects ongoing efforts by both groups to foster creativity while promoting civic values such as environmental stewardship. Residents are encouraged to visit the Community Center and view the new benches.

Art For The People is a registered 501(c)3 organization, and all donations supporting its work are tax-deductible.
