The City of Takoma Park announced on April 4 a series of events for Earth Month, including an early Earth Day celebration called “Change Grows Here” scheduled for April 12. The activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park and the TPSS Co-op.
Earth Day has been observed since April 22, 1970, growing into a global event involving more than one billion people in over 193 countries each year. Takoma Park officials say they aim to engage residents in environmental protection, conservation, and sustainability through these local celebrations.
Events at Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park will feature community weaving, nature-themed arts and crafts, face painting, tree care demonstrations, guided walks focused on removing invasive plants, games, giveaways, snow cones, a clothing swap, bike repairs, and a bike rodeo. At the TPSS Co-op location on Ethan Allen Avenue, attendees can meet organizations focused on caring for people and the environment. Additional activities include food vendors, giant bubbles for children to play with, sidewalk chalk art sessions led by Takoma Cooperative Nursery School staffers making crafts with participants as well as music performances and remarks by elected officials.
Residents are encouraged to participate before the main event by volunteering or joining special activities such as showcasing e-mobility vehicles like electric cars or e-bikes at the E-Mobility Showcase or registering for a community bike ride between the two locations.
In addition to local events in Takoma Park during April’s observance of Earth Month there is also Montgomery County GreenFest—the county’s largest annual environmental festival—scheduled for Saturday April 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Wheaton.
