The City of Takoma Park announced on Apr. 7 that it will host a Public Art Project Build Day on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Takoma Park Community Center Basketball Court at 7500 Maple Avenue.

The event aims to bring together community members to celebrate local immigrant communities through collaborative public art. Organizers said ribbons will be woven through the chain-link fence at the basketball court, featuring designs inspired by the colors of flags from Ethiopia, El Salvador, and other countries.

Anyone aged ten and older is welcome to participate in creating the artwork, and no reservations are required. The city also noted that Montgomery County Public Schools students can earn Student Service Learning (SSL) community service hours for their participation.

According to organizers, this initiative is part of an ongoing effort by the City of Takoma Park’s Arts and Humanities Division to promote public art projects that reflect the city’s diversity. More information about past projects and details about the program are available on the City’s website.

The event provides an opportunity for residents to engage with their neighbors while contributing creatively to a project that celebrates cultural heritage in Takoma Park.
