The City of Takoma Park announced on Mar. 27 that it has been awarded three grants from the Maryland Energy Administration, totaling nearly $500,000.
The funding aims to support energy efficiency and electrification upgrades in both residential and municipal buildings throughout the city. These efforts are part of Takoma Park’s ongoing commitment to improving building performance and meeting its climate goals.
According to the city, a $400,000 Residential Energy Equity Grant will be used for electrification upgrades for Phase II grantees of the Multifamily Building Improvement Grant (MFBIG) program. Applications for Phase II are open until Thursday, April 30. Additionally, a $32,000 grant from the Energy Equity Community Block Grant program will fund energy audits for Phase I grantees during the upcoming fall round of MFBIG. The third award is a $50,000 grant from the Local Government Energy Modernization program to fund energy audits at all four municipal buildings.
City officials said these grants will help with electrification transitions in many aging multifamily buildings across Takoma Park. They expect this work will lead to healthier homes that use fuel more efficiently while aligning with local climate objectives. The funding from L-GEM is also intended to allow a comprehensive audit and help create a plan toward better energy efficiency in city-owned facilities.
These new resources are expected to advance both immediate improvements and long-term strategies as Takoma Park works toward sustainability targets.
