The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team lost to George Washington by a score of 4–0 on April 15. The Hawks managed only two hits and were unable to score during the game.
This result adds another loss for UMES, whose record now stands at 10–30 overall and 2–13 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The team struggled offensively, leaving seven runners on base over the course of the game.
The Hawks’ first hit came in the third inning, but they could not capitalize as a popup ended that opportunity with a runner stranded. Another single in the sixth gave UMES hope, but back-to-back outs left two more runners without scoring. Defensively, UMES allowed one run in the second inning and three more in the fifth after four hits and an error by their defense.
Pitching for UMES included four innings from their starter with one strikeout before being relieved in the fifth. The reliever tossed two scoreless innings with one strikeout to finish out the game.
Statistically, one player improved her season hit total to 30 while another brought her single tally up to 18. Two players drew two walks each during this contest, contributing to their season totals of twelve and six walks respectively. On defense, Lacey led with five putouts and three assists at shortstop and currently leads UMES with eighty-five assists this season.
Looking ahead, UMES will host North Carolina Central for its sixth conference series of the year on Saturday, April 18–19. Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with both games scheduled for live streaming on YouTube.
