Anne Arundel Community College issued the following announcement on Aug. 20.
"The statue beautification was our first project of the semester. Actually seeing the space was really nice, that’s not something that you often get with a school project. My main approach was to create a congregative area, something students can really use. The rest was filling in with plants, making it attractive and a little more secluded. I was very picky about plants; I wanted some soft, light, very peaceful feeling colors. However, there's also a ton of black-eyed susans, the Maryland state flower, which symbolize justice. I enjoy landscape architecture for the balance between science and art. I’m interested in spaces that aren’t just functional but beautiful, too."
-Kei Ellerbrock, former AACC landscape architecture student, winner of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Beautification Project for her peace garden design, Riverhawk in Focus
