The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed concerns over proposed legislation to raise the minimum wage in Maryland to $20 through a ballot measure. The organization, which advocates for small businesses in the state, shared its position via a statement from NFIB Maryland State Director Mike O'Halloran.
O'Halloran highlighted the challenges that such an increase could pose to local businesses. "The negative effect of a $20 minimum wage on Maryland small businesses cannot be overstated," he stated. He pointed out that Maryland already ranks as the most expensive state for labor costs, adding, "This idea could not come at a worse time."
Further complicating matters, O'Halloran noted another legislative proposal from the Governor that might result in higher taxes for job creators. He warned against making Maryland less competitive by saying, "We can’t continue to price ourselves out of market with proposals like these."
