In April 2022, the Maryland General Assembly enacted a mandatory statewide paid leave law, overriding then-Governor Larry Hogan's veto. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) had strongly opposed the legislation and supported the governor's veto. They actively campaigned against the proposal both in Annapolis and through media channels.

The new mandate is set to take effect next year, with Maryland currently working on implementing the Family And Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program. NFIB is collaborating with its members to provide feedback to the state's Department of Labor, aiming to ensure that the program benefits both employees and employers.

NFIB has invited interested parties to join its Maryland FAMLI Ad Hoc Committee. Julianna Rauf, Grassroots Manager at NFIB, can be contacted via email for those wishing to participate. The committee seeks input from business owners, regardless of their expertise in FAMLI, valuing their business experience and perspective.

"Join NFIB Maryland’s FAMLI Ad Hoc Committee today! Please e-mail Grassroots Manager Julianna Rauf indicating your interest in participating," states an invitation from NFIB. "There are only a few seats left, so join now to be considered to help influence a FAMLI program that better aligns with Maryland’s small business community."
