The Brookings Institution announced that the United States and the United Kingdom have reached a limited trade agreement, which includes mutual tariff reductions and sector-specific concessions.
According to the UK Government, the United States has agreed to reduce tariffs on UK-manufactured vehicles from 27.5% to 10% for up to 100,000 units per year. This reduction mirrors the UK's 2024 export volume to the US and is intended to stabilize trade conditions while safeguarding jobs within the British automotive sector. Major UK carmakers, such as Jaguar Land Rover, are expected to benefit significantly from these savings.
The Wall Street Journal reported that this deal makes it more cost-effective to import vehicles from the UK with minimal U.S. content than to import USMCA-compliant vehicles from Mexico or Canada that contain significantly more American parts. This preferential treatment for UK imports could undermine North American manufacturing and set a concerning precedent for future trade negotiations.
According to Bernama, as part of the new UK-US trade agreement, International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, has placed an order for 32 Boeing 787-10 aircraft valued at approximately $10 billion. In return, the United States will allow tariff-free imports of Rolls-Royce engines and related aircraft components from the UK. This arrangement is expected to enhance collaboration between the aerospace industries of both nations and support transatlantic supply chains.
