Calvert County Commission on Aging met Aug. 16.

Here is the minutes provided by the Commission:

Elizabeth Foster called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. at the Calvert Pines Senior Center. The meeting began with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Attendees: Elizabeth Foster, Kathy Baron, Harriet Gossett, Tanea Granlund, Terry Long, Jeannette Findley, Pam Williams, Margaret Phipps, Frank Krohnert, Len Winkler, Susan Justice, Liz Youngblood

Non-Attendees: Robin Madera, Beverly Butler, Darlene Boerlage,

Agenda/Minutes: The agenda/minutes were distributed. Tanea mentioned that the Alzheimer’s Walk listed on the agenda and July 19 minutes is not Sept. 15, but Sept. 22. Motion to approve minutes: Len, Second: Tanea. Approved.

Chair and Vice Chair Remarks/Reports: Elizabeth Foster - Dorothy Hill has resigned.

Guest: Robyn Truslow, Public Relations Coordinator, Calvert Library

- SAGE (Seasoned Adults Growing Educationally) – Many agencies on board, CSM is not. Mark Voland from Communications & Media developed the SAGE logo and Facebook page. If you know of an event coming up, you can post it and “share” to SAGE group. Currently SAGE is focusing on younger groups. No regular scheduled meetings as yet. Need volunteers.possible SCORE, NARFE, Calvert County retired teachers group, and to get the word out.

Guest: Lakeysha Moore, Alzheimer’s Association

- Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Saturday, September 22. Looking for more ways to outreach and to grow walks in So. MD area. Fundraising on Facebook is now available. Participants can personalize with their information and accept donations. Different incentives for donations. This year’s goal is $80,000. Calvert has the highest rate of returning teams. Virtual Walker participates in spirit by walking on their own without being present on walk day. They can collect donations from family, friends, and co- workers. They receive the same perks as walkers on walk day and earn incentive prizes based on the funds raised.

- Kathy & Len will set up a table at the Friday NB Market with information to promote the Walk.

- Possible to invite Lakeysha to BOCC meeting in August or early September, 2019 to promote the Walk.

- Looking for caregivers willing to share their story of a client/family member who suffers/suffered from

Alzheimer’s/Dementia.

- OOA Report: A written report was provided on the following topics:

- Susan discussed Asbury Solomons entering into agreement to transfer CCNC to Oasis Nursing & Rehab as of September 1.

Delegate and Committee Reports:

United Seniors of Maryland: Len Winkler - No report

Community Awareness and Outreach: Tanea Granlund

- Aug. 7 – NNO – Events went well with members doing “walk-about” from location to location. St. Leonard event was geared more for children, NB closed early due to weather, gave a lot of info out at CRE. Possibly look into attending event at H.E. Brown Community Center next year.

- Sept. 8 is Health Fair at St. Peters/Middleham, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tanea & Beverly attending.

- Sept. 22 Alzheimer’s Walk at Asbury Solomons, 8 – 11 a.m. – Signup sheet available for team registration. Table available free of charge. 

Housing: Harriet Gossett/Len Winkler

- Harriet attended Calvert Affordable Housing Alliance meeting – working on bylaws

- Susan mentioned that Lee Heithoff from Legal Aid will do a presentation for renters in NB area – TBD.

Transportation: Pam Williams/Terry Long

- No report

Senior Wellness: - No report

Unfinished Business:

- Vote for new Outreach Chair – noted that Darlene expressed interest in taking on this position. Will discuss at September’s meeting since Darlene did not attend this month’s meeting.

New Business:

- Senior tax credit application for 65+ to receive additional credit on their real property tax bill from the County. Information sent via email to members. Will request approval from BOCC.

Announcements:

- Tanea has information on Parkinson’s Support Group. Will promote with flyers and in Nov/Dec Senior Connection.

- The next COA meeting will be Thursday, September 20, 9 a.m. at the Southern Pines Senior Center. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
