Steny Hoyer, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, recently shared his views on current political and economic issues via social media. With an extensive career in public service that began in the Maryland House of Representatives and continued through the Maryland State Senate, Hoyer has been a vocal participant in national discussions.

On June 5, 2025, Hoyer criticized Republican efforts to advance a tax bill which he described as a “disgusting abomination”. He expressed concerns that this legislation would leave over 11 million Americans without health insurance, significantly increase the national debt more than any previous bill, and provide tax cuts primarily benefiting the wealthiest individuals.

In another post dated June 6, 2025, Hoyer commented on the latest jobs report. He noted that job gains during Donald Trump's presidency are averaging one-third of those seen during Joe Biden's administration. According to Hoyer, “Trump's policies continue to slow down growth”, lower economic confidence, and heighten recession expectations.

Later that day, Hoyer addressed Elon Musk’s involvement with DOGE operations. He stated that Musk’s actions have severely impacted federal institutions and disrupted many federal employees' lives. While acknowledging the irreversible damage caused by these actions, he suggested that rehiring affected employees is a step toward recovery: “rehiring these hardworking, patriotic Americans is a start”.

Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Steny Hoyer holds degrees from both the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
