Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has recently taken to social media to address concerns over Congressional authority and ongoing legislative debates. Hoyer's posts focus on protecting the appropriations process, advocating for bipartisan cooperation, and criticizing recent Republican proposals.
On July 21, 2025, Hoyer warned against what he described as efforts by political figures to undermine federal oversight: "Congress cannot sit idle as Trump, Vought, and DOGE seek to weaponize federal agencies and turn the entire appropriations process into a rubber stamp. Tune in now as @AppropsDems fight to protect our federal workers, the American people, and Article I:"
The following day, July 22, Hoyer emphasized the importance of bipartisan solutions in preserving Congressional power under Article I of the Constitution: "While Democrats and Republicans may not find common ground on every issue, we must take action to preserve Congress's power under Article I. I will continue working with my colleagues across the aisle to create bipartisan solutions that serve the American people."
Later that same day, he criticized Republican fiscal policy proposals related to Medicaid and tax cuts: "Republicans are slashing Medicaid for millions & want everyday Americans to foot the $3.4T bill to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. @USCBO's latest report makes it clear: the big, ugly bill will have expensive consequences for the nation & American people."
Hoyer has a long history in public service; before his tenure in Congress began in 1981 after replacing Gladys Spellman, he served both in the Maryland House of Representatives and on the Maryland State Senate from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from both University of Maryland (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD). His continued engagement reflects his longstanding commitment to legislative processes and government accountability.
