Rep. Glenn Ivey, who represents Maryland’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, marked the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis's passing and addressed current issues related to congressional authority and U.S. foreign policy in a series of posts on July 17, 2025.
In his first post, Ivey reflected on the legacy of John Lewis: "Five years ago today, we lost Congressman John Lewis—a giant in the fight for justice. But his legacy of 'Good Trouble' lives on in every peaceful protest, every vote cast, and every voice raised against injustice. We’ve made progress, but the road ahead is still long. Just over," he wrote on July 17.
Later that day, Ivey commented on congressional fiscal responsibility: "Congress must not surrender the power of the purse. Executive rescissions today weaken future budget deals. We’re here to invest in the people—not rubber-stamp fear-driven cuts." This statement was posted at 16:55 UTC.
Addressing human rights and foreign policy that evening, Ivey stated: "Human rights have always been central to U.S. foreign policy.
Backing @USAID‑funded groups like @Cristosal—once a major check on Bukele’s abuses—helped hold authoritarianism at bay.
Now, Trump is funneling taxpayer dollars to detain people legally in the U.S.—and even backing". The post highlighted concerns about changes in federal funding priorities under former President Donald Trump.
Ivey has served as Maryland’s 4th District representative since 2023 after succeeding Anthony Brown. He previously held office in the Maryland House of Representatives and brings experience from both state and federal legislative bodies. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1961 and currently residing in Cheverly at age 62, Ivey holds degrees from Princeton University (BA) and Harvard Law School (JD).
