Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, shared several updates on his official Twitter account on July 17, 2025, addressing issues related to transportation, housing, civil rights, and mental health.

In a post made at 14:31 UTC, Hoyer emphasized the importance of balancing improvements in transportation with the need for affordable housing and essential services. He stated, "Making Americans' commutes faster, cheaper, safer, and sustainable shouldn't come at the expense of their housing or essential needs. Later that day at 16:29 UTC, Hoyer commemorated the legacy of John Lewis on the fifth anniversary of his passing. He wrote, "Today we mark 5 years without my friend & brother, John Lewis, amid an attack on the civil rights that he fought to secure and protect. This poster outside of my office is a reminder to remain committed to furthering John's mission to achieve equality & justice for all by".

Steny Hoyer has been a member of Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland's state legislature from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
