MARYLAND DEPARMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES: /Forestland Protected in Wicomico County

Forest

Maryland Department of Natural Resources issued the following announcement on Oct. 24.

The Maryland Environmental Trust, a unit of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, partnered with the Lower Shore Land Trust to permanently protect 154 acres in the Nanticoke River watershed. Property owner Mike Phillips donated the conservation easement forever protecting this important forestland.

Located near more than 2,300 acres of protected lands, the easement is in a rural area of Wicomico County just outside of the village of Quantico and the Quantico Historic District. The surrounding area is dominated by farm and forest land.

“Working with Lower Shore Land Trust and Maryland Environmental Trust was a good choice for me, and I feel I get the advantage of both local knowledge and state benefits,” landowner Mike Phillips said.

The Lower Shore Land Trust has worked across Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties since 1990, conserving working lands and wildlife habitat, protecting water quality, and improving access to outdoor recreation for residents and visitors to the Lower Eastern Shore.

“We are pleased to have worked with Mr. Phillips and Lower Shore Land Trust to protect this property,” Maryland Environmental Trust Director Bill Leahy said. “We applaud his conservation ethic and thrilled to add to the tapestry of protected land in Wicomico County.”
