Jared Thurmon, a writer for Adventist Review, likens present-day censorship to George Orwell’s dystopia in the latter’s poignant novel “1984.”
Thurmon said that the current atmosphere wherein free speech is constantly being thwarted by Big Tech companies is not so different from the world that Orwell envisioned in his novel that was released in 1948. He said that Orwell’s world where free speech and even free-thinking are heavily monitored and penalized has now become close to reality due to the constant meddling of social media companies on the liberties of some individuals.
Thurmon referred to the First Amendment when he argued that no entity should be allowed to silence any individual regardless of his or her ideologies or political views. He said that the Constitution protects every individual from censorship because it is every person’s right to express his or her ideas and that no organization or authority be given the power to bar those individuals from exercising their right to free speech, otherwise the nation is in danger of becoming the dystopia that George Orwell envisioned.
Other like-minded individuals also shared their thoughts on social media companies’ censorship. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and author Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shared their criticisms of social media companies for censoring individuals. DeSantis called it “political manipulation” while Kennedy labeled it “dangerous.”
