Dr. Jamie Oberman | Frederick Breathe Free
Dr. Jamie Oberman of Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers has years of experience treating the most challenging patients, including U.S. Navy Seals.
He served the U.S. proudly as a physician in the U.S. Navy.
“I went to Boston College for undergrad and Tufts Medical School on the Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program, which is like ROTC for medical school equivalents,” Oberman said. “Then I actually joined the Navy. I did my internship in pediatrics with the intention at that time -- this is back in 1996 -- of doing a fellowship in pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT). I still enjoy a significant portion of pediatrics, but plans change as we evolve. The Navy only allows one trainee for a pediatric fellowship every four years, so that just didn't work out, but it's for the better because I actually wound up liking general comprehensive ENT."
After the pediatric internship, he did a tour as a diving medical officer with the Navy SEALS and Explosive Ordnance Disposal.
ENT is very important to Navy divers. “Most people wouldn't make that correlation, but it very much is because of the sinus and barometric pressure changes in the perinatal sinuses and in the middle ear space enclosed cavities like in the skull base,” Oberman said. “I thought that would be very career enhancing. In fact, I still do find a lot of patients still seek me out because of that background. I have a lot of civilian divers who want a diving medicine perspective.”
Oberman then completed a residency training in otolaryngology, the specialty of treating the ears, nose and throat.
“After that, I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan,” he said. “I was department head there, served on numerous committees there and then transferred to Naval Hospital Jacksonville, which is a community-based hospital. Then I was transferred to what used to be National Naval Medical Center, which is now called Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.”
He retired from the Navy in 2017 and established Frederick Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers.
