The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health division, part of the Department of Labor, has implemented new standards to prevent heat-related illnesses in workplaces. These regulations were finalized last September and focus on safeguarding workers from heat stress.
Under these rules, employers must develop plans when the heat index exceeds 80 degrees. They are also required to provide adequate water access, cool areas for rest, and allow frequent breaks during high temperatures.
To assist employers in complying with these standards, the Department of Labor has launched a webpage offering resources, including a model Heat Illness Prevention Plan.
