Maryland Governor Wes Moore has issued a warning to local officials about the state's anticipated budget deficits in the coming years. This announcement was made during the Maryland Association of Counties’ annual summer gathering held last month in Ocean City. Governor Moore emphasized the importance of fiscal discipline and strategic investment of state funds moving forward.

According to reports from the Department of Legislative Services, Maryland is facing projected deficits that could exceed $1 billion by 2028. Analysts have identified the extensive overhaul of the state's public education system as a significant factor contributing to these potential financial shortfalls.

State lawmakers are mandated to pass a balanced budget each year during their 90-day legislative session, with the next session scheduled to commence on January 10, 2024.
