The start of 2024 marked significant changes for small business owners in Maryland, with the state's minimum wage increasing to $15 per hour for all employers. This adjustment follows the passage of SB555 by the General Assembly during the 2023 legislative session. The law accelerates the timeline for reaching a $15 minimum wage and removes a provision that allowed smaller businesses with fewer than 15 employees more time to comply.

In addition to the wage increase, two local jurisdictions have implemented bag bans effective January 1. Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County enacted ordinances earlier this year that impose restrictions on carryout bags and outline new requirements for retailers.

For further details on these changes, individuals are encouraged to visit the Department of Labor's webpage or reach out to Mike O’Halloran with any questions or concerns.
