Daniel Costello, operations manager of Frederick Breathe Free, said that sinusitis can interfere with quality sleep by triggering symptoms like congestion, mouth breathing, and facial pain, all of which disrupt restful sleep. This statement was made on Instagram on March 19.
"Sinusitis can significantly worsen sleep by causing symptoms that disrupt comfort and breathing," said Costello, according to Instagram. "Nasal congestion and inflammation from sinusitis can make it difficult to breathe through the nose, forcing mouth breathing. Postnasal drip, a common symptom, can trigger snoring or a feeling of stomach pain. Facial pain or pressure associated with sinusitis can make it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position."
According to the Cleveland Clinic, chronic sinusitis is a prolonged inflammation of the sinuses that can cause persistent symptoms such as facial pressure, nasal congestion, and postnasal drip. These symptoms can last for 12 weeks or more, significantly affecting daily activities and sleep quality. The condition often requires medical evaluation and treatment to alleviate discomfort and prevent complications.
Research from the National Sleep Foundation indicates that more than 37% of adults with nasal congestion experience poor sleep, snoring, and nighttime awakenings. This figure is even higher among individuals with sinus-related conditions like allergic or chronic sinusitis. Treating congestion has been shown to lead to measurable improvements in sleep duration and efficiency.
A large-scale European study found that individuals with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) experience significantly impaired sleep quality. The severity of CRS symptoms was directly associated with increased sleep disturbances. These findings highlight the substantial impact of CRS on sleep health.
