Steny Hoyer, a long-time congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district, took to social media to address several issues regarding current administrative actions. In a series of tweets on April 15, 2025, he criticized measures from the Trump Administration and highlighted the importance of certain governmental programs.
In an April 15 tweet, Hoyer expressed concerns over the changes initiated by Elon Musk and the Trump Administration. He stated that these actions are “slashing staff & causing chaos & long wait times at Social Security offices across the country” and emphasized the value of safeguarding this essential benefits system against Republican threats. Hoyer also noted his visit to a Social Security office in Greenbelt to understand the impacts firsthand on seniors. "Elon Musk & the Trump Admin are slashing staff & causing chaos & long wait times at Social Security offices across the country."
In a subsequent tweet on the same day, Hoyer conveyed that the actions of former President Trump and Elon Musk at the US Treasury undermine efforts tied to the IRS and the Direct File program. He stated, "Trump & Musk's actions at the US Treasury & attacks on the IRS undermine the success of Direct File & threaten our work to support taxpayers." He affirmed the commitment of Democrats to enhance this program for the benefit of American taxpayers by continuously working to lower their costs. "Trump & Musk's actions at the US Treasury & attacks on the IRS undermine the success of Direct File & threatens our work to support taxpayers."
On the matter of tax filing, Hoyer noted the significance of Tax Day, April 15, as the deadline for tax return submissions. He acknowledged the participation of thousands of Americans using the IRS Direct File system this year, which allows for secure and free filings, and urged others to join the 32 million taxpayers who have benefited from this service since 2024. "Today, Tax Day, is the last day to file tax returns & I am proud that thousands of Americans utilized @IRSnews Direct File to file securely & for free this year."
Hoyer has served in the U.S. Congress, representing Maryland's 5th District, since 1981, succeeding Gladys Spellman. He initially served in the Maryland House of Representatives, followed by the Maryland State Senate. Born in New York City in 1939, Hoyer is now based in Mechanicsville.
