Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, addressed constituents on July 30, 2025, through a series of posts highlighting public safety during extreme weather, the legacy of federal health programs, and taxpayer services.

In his first post at 15:17 UTC, Hoyer warned residents about ongoing hazardous weather conditions: "Southern Maryland is currently under a heat advisory until 8:00 this evening. As temperatures continue to rise throughout the region, I urge everyone in #MD05 and beyond to utilize these resources from @MDHealthDept to stay safe & cool during this time."

Later that day at 16:20 UTC, he marked an anniversary for key federal programs: "60 years ago, a promise was made to take care of our seniors and the most vulnerable. Medicare and Medicaid have been a lifeline for families across the nation. While Republicans strip these programs to give tax breaks to the wealthy, Democrats continue to fight for the promise".

By early evening at 19:42 UTC, Hoyer commented on changes to IRS policy: "The IRS' Direct File gave Americans a simple, secure, and free way to meet tax obligations. Ending the program is neither efficient nor cost-effective. I'll keep fighting to improve vital taxpayer services and lower costs for Americans."

Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981. He previously served in both chambers of Maryland's state legislature between 1967 and 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
