Kelly O. Hayes United States Attorney for the District of Maryland | Department of Justice
Today, Amos Oluremi Nureni, a 43-year-old resident of Laurel, Maryland, was sentenced to ten years in federal prison. The sentencing by U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang also includes four years of supervised release. Nureni faced charges for conspiracy to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The announcement was made by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, along with contributions from Acting Special Agent in Charge Evan Campanella of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) – Baltimore, Special Agent in Charge Ibrar A. Mian from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – Washington Division, and Chief Marc Yamada of the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD).
In September 2023, HSI and DEA initiated an investigation into Nureni due to suspected fentanyl trafficking activities. During this period, law enforcement conducted two controlled purchases where Nureni sold approximately 400-500 pills to an undercover officer.
The pills were blue and marked with "M30," resembling legitimate oxycodone hydrochloride pills from manufacturers. Laboratory analysis confirmed that these "M30" pills contained fentanyl. Overall, Nureni sold around 866 fentanyl pills — nearly 100 grams of a mixture containing fentanyl — to the undercover officer.
On March 27, 2024, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Nureni's residence in Laurel. They discovered a bag containing approximately 10.48 grams (98 pills) of a substance with fentanyl and a silver Taurus pistol with an obliterated number inside his safe. The pistol was loaded with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine.
Additionally found at the residence were various items including large silver and red hydraulic presses; small silver hydraulic press; digital scale with white powder residue; bags containing approximately 6.44 grams (61 pills) of fentanyl; approximately 6.25 grams of cocaine base; about 0.859 grams of cocaine; around 3.04 grams of cocaine; approximately 3.02 grams of methamphetamine; and roughly 1.478 grams of dipentylone.
U.S. Attorney Hayes commended HSI, DEA, and MCPD for their roles in the investigation while expressing gratitude towards Assistant U.S Attorneys Megan S. McKoy and Elizabeth Wright who prosecuted the case.
