Hs 09

Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy West in the Baltimore City Public School System reported a dropout rate of less than 3 percent during the 2016-2017 school year, according to a Maryland State Wire analysis of the latest Maryland schools report card.

The annual dropout rate as defined by the Maryland State Department of Education is the percentage of students in grades 9 through 12 who leave school before graduation or completion of a state-approved education program for any reason except death. It only includes students who do not enroll in another school or education program during the current year, which runs from July through June.

The Maryland Department of Education calculates the dropout rate by dividing the number of dropouts by the total number of students enrolled.

Overall, 275,384 students were enrolled in Maryland public schools during the 2016-2017 school year. Of those, 2.75 percent (or 7,583 students) dropped out, which is a slight increase from the 2.57 percent of the previous school year.
