As we pass the two-week mark of the 2023 Maryland Legislative Session, we want to make sure that business owners in Anne Arundel County (and in all of Maryland!) are aware of some big changes to business licensing that resulted from Senate Bill 496 - a bill that was proposed by the Maryland Circuit Court Clerk’s Association "for the purpose of modernizing and updating business licenses for the State to reflect today’s modern technology and practices."

Among many changes:Restaurants still must obtain a restaurant license but no longer need to obtain a trader's license.Nonresident construction businesses must obtain a license in the first county where they do construction business in the state, but additional licenses for each contract are no longer required.Storage warehouses must obtain a storage warehouse license.Chain stores must obtain a chain store license and are required to have a trader’s license for each store.

To learn more about the bill and its most impactful provisions, as well as see some FAQs for business owners, take a look at the Comptroller of Maryland's Tax Alert here:https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/.../Tax-Alert-2022-SB-496...

Thank you to the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County for making sure that this was on our - and business owners' - radar!
