Maryland Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on June 22.
60 rising ninth graders from Dundalk High began their high school experience as P-TECH students—not in the classroom, but hands on at a Whiting-Turner construction site and a Stanley Black & Decker showroom, among others.
These visits with program partners at Whiting-Turner, Stanley Black & Decker, KCI Technologies and Alban CAT kicked off the student’s involvement in P-TECH, as well as introduced them to the businesses they will receive mentorship and training from for the next four to six years.
“I want you to understand that our mission to innovate includes all of you,” Stanley Black & Decker’s Vice President of Human Resources Ralph Doran told the students on the second stop of the week-long tour.
More formally known as Pathways in Technology Early College High School, P-TECH will give selected students “the opportunity to start, in grade nine, on a guided path towards a college degree and career preparation at no cost to them or their families,” explained Douglas Handy, Baltimore County Public School’s director of career and technology education and fine arts.
In addition to their high school diploma, P-TECH students will also earn an associate of applied science degree in engineering technology, and will receive paid internships from their industry partners.
