The City of Crisfield was able to offer free Wi-Fi for those attending the J. Millard Tawes Crab & Clam Bake on July 18 thanks to the Governor’s Office of Rural Broadband.
“Our administration has been committed to collaborative efforts bringing improved broadband and wireless accessibility to communities that were largely ignored under previous administrations,” Gov. Larry Hogan was quoted as saying in a press release.
“Access to affordable internet service is a proven economic driver that positively impacts property values, enables telework opportunities, and supports online education.”

City Manager Rick Pollitt said they were looking forward to having a more connected Crisfield community.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Governor’s Office of Rural Broadband to provide Wi-Fi for our guests at the Tawes Crab Feast,” Crisfield City Manager Rick Pollitt said.
“More importantly, our cooperative efforts have provided the possibility of high-speed internet throughout Crisfield, fostering a better local climate for positive economic development and providing access to a critical resource for our residents.”
The Office of Rural Broadband was created as a result of an executive order issued in 2017. Pilot projects in Garrett and Somerset counties were completed successfully, and there was a conference in June 2018 for leaders to further discuss the needs of each county. The office has recently completed a fiber-optic network in the area, which has helped increase high-speed internet access in Crisfield and Somerset County.
“With completion of this pilot project, we have significantly increased opportunities for broadband connectivity in Somerset County and gained important knowledge and experience that will support similar efforts throughout Maryland,” Director of the Office of Rural Broadband, Kenrick Gordon, was quoted as saying.
“With the partnership of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and the Maryland Department of Information Technology, my office will continue its mission to provide high-speed internet access to all parts of our great state.”
