On July 12, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) appeared at the Senate Judiciary Committee to introduce U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Maddox at the start of his confirmation hearing for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The senators had recommended Judge Maddox to President Joe Biden who made the nomination earlier this year.

“Through years of public service, Judge Maddox has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and the Constitution, ensuring equity and fairness, and advancing justice. His outstanding character and qualifications were on full display in today’s hearing, and I urge my Judiciary Committee colleagues to support his nomination as soon as possible,” Senator Van Hollen said.

“Judge Maddox, who calls Baltimore home, has a remarkable history and experience, and I was eager to recommend his nomination to President Biden,” said Senator Cardin. “Having served as a federal prosecutor for nearly a decade, and now having served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for over a year, if confirmed, Judge Maddox would continue to serve in the same court where he now sits as a Magistrate Judge and where he practiced as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for many years. He has a long history of integrity, judicial competence and temperament. With Judge Maddox, Marylanders can be confident about their access to fair, just and equal treatment under the law.”

Judge Maddox has been nominated to fill one of two current vacancies on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He would fill the seat formerly held by Judge Paul Grimm, who was appointed by President Obama in 2012, retired from the bench in December 2022. U.S. Magistrate Judge Brendan Hurson is awaiting a final Senate confirmation vote and would fill the seat formerly held by Judge George Hazel, who was appointed by President Obama in 2014, retired from the bench in February 2023.

U.S. MAGISTRATE JUDGE MATTHEW MADDOX

Born and raised in Maryland, U.S. Magistrate Judge Maddox graduated summa cum laude from Morgan State University in Baltimore in 1999, where he majored in philosophy and religious studies, and minored in psychology. After receiving his B.A. degree, Judge Maddox was a Fulbright Scholar and taught high school through the Teach for America program. Judge Maddox received his J.D. degree from the Yale Law School in 2011.

Upon graduation from law school, Judge Maddox served as a law clerk to the Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia. From October 2012 to August 2014, Judge Maddox worked as a litigation associate at the law firm of Holland & Knight in Washington, D.C. From August 2014 to August 2015, Judge Maddox served as a law clerk to the Honorable André M. Davis, a judge serving on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

In September 2015, Judge Maddox was appointed as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland. In this capacity, Judge Maddox prosecuted a range of criminal cases and conducted trainings for law enforcement on the topics of human trafficking and identity theft. In November 2020, Judge Maddox was selected to serve as Deputy Chief of the Major Crimes Section in the Northern Division of the United States Attorney’s Office.

On February 22, 2022, Judge Maddox was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge and sits in Baltimore.
