The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) has announced an upcoming exhibition showcasing the work of five Baker Artist Awards recipients. The exhibition will feature 20 works by Selin Balci, Kelley Bell, Oletha DeVane, Jordan Tierney, and Stephen Towns. Each artist was recognized for their expertise in craft and unique artistic vision. The exhibition is scheduled to run from April 27 to July 27, 2025.
"The Baker Artist Awards exhibition demonstrates the extraordinary visual and interdisciplinary artists in Baltimore’s unparalleled creative community," stated Asma Naeem, the BMA’s Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director. "The BMA is delighted to partner with the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance in recognizing and celebrating the remarkably talented artists in our region."
Two events will be held alongside the exhibition. The Baker Artist Awards Celebration is set for April 26, featuring presentations from awardees across disciplines, along with late-night gallery access and entertainment by DJ Pangelica. Registration is required for this free event.
Additionally, "Baker Artist Awards Live: An Afternoon of Artistic Excellence" will occur on May 3. This ticketed event will be hosted by Kristin Putchinski and include performances from previous awardees such as Judah Adashi and Ruby Fulton.
The exhibition is curated by Katie Cooke and Antoinette Roberts of the BMA.
Selin Balci's work focuses on biology through mold spores collected locally. Kelley Bell's Fantastic Village draws inspiration from playground memories linked to her hometown's architecture. Oletha DeVane's pieces reflect themes of mythology and transformation over several decades of creation.
Jordan Tierney uses materials sourced from urban landscapes for sculptures that explore environmental connections. Stephen Towns presents paintings and quilts depicting African American leisure at Paradise Park in Florida.
The Baker Artist Awards are supported by the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance and funded by The William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund.
Founded in 1914, the BMA houses a diverse collection of over 97,000 objects spanning various cultures and eras.
