In his tweet, he stated, "If the Trump Admin cares about efficiency, they ought to protect access to the IRS's free, easy-to-use tax filing service." He referenced a letter co-authored with Senator Warren, questioning the administration's decision to cut the Direct File service, which reportedly saved the average user $160 in tax preparation costs in 2024.

The following day, on April 23, 2025, Hoyer expressed concern over potential budget cuts by the Trump Administration and their impact on vulnerable populations in Maryland. He mentioned discussions with local leaders regarding these cuts’ implications in his tweet: "This is serious: Local leaders have told me that Trump’s cuts could lead to evictions and child hunger across Maryland."
