Congressman Steny Hoyer, representing Maryland's 5th district, recently presented a series of criticisms regarding former President Donald Trump's economic policies. Utilizing the social media platform X, the seasoned lawmaker expressed his concerns over the trajectory of the American economy during and after Trump’s administration, highlighting various economic indicators and policies he finds troubling.

In a post dated April 30, 2025, Hoyer remarked, "Trump inherited an American economy that was the envy of the world. It only took him 100 days to send it into a tailspin." This comment underscores Hoyer's position that the former president's actions led to a swift downturn in economic performance.

In a consecutive tweet, also from April 30, 2025, Hoyer commented on the impact of Trump's trade policies, stating, "We owe all of this to Trump's tariffs – to the uncertainty he has sown in our economy. He calls this downturn 'short-term pain.' Americans recognize his disastrous economic agenda for what it is: an existential threat to their families, their businesses, and their livelihoods." Hoyer here critiques the tariffs implemented during Trump’s tenure, attributing economic uncertainty to these measures.

Continuing on the same date, Hoyer highlighted recent economic trends in another tweet, writing, "Prices are going up. The stock market is trending down. Our economy is shrinking for the first time since the final months of the pandemic, as today's GDP numbers demonstrate. And, most importantly, the American people are hurting." This statement emphasizes Hoyer's perspective on the tangible effects of the economic policies, particularly noting the country's shrinkage in GDP and its impact on citizens.

Steny Hoyer, 83, from Mechanicsville, has been a fixture in the U.S. Congress since 1981, following a career in Maryland's state legislature. Starting in the Maryland House of Representatives and later the Maryland State Senate, Hoyer's educational background includes a BA from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.
