Steny Hoyer, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland's 5th district since 1981, has been vocal on various issues through his social media presence. His recent tweets address significant political and economic matters.

On May 5, 2025, Hoyer expressed his sentiments regarding Representative Jan Schakowsky's decision to retire after serving Illinois' 9th District for 26 years in the House. He stated, "I'm sorry to hear my dear friend Rep. @janschakowsky will conclude her 26 years of serving IL-09 in the House at the end of the 119th Congress." Hoyer acknowledged Schakowsky’s contributions with gratitude for her "intellect, integrity, & kindness."

The following day, on May 6, Hoyer addressed concerns about economic policies under former President Trump's administration. In a tweet posted at 14:34 UTC, he remarked on the impact of staff and budget cuts at the IRS and other challenges facing American taxpayers. He noted that these actions do not alleviate economic worries for Americans: "The Trump Admin's staff + budget cuts & DOGE's infiltration at the IRS does little to ease hardworking Americans' economic concerns." He also mentioned his inquiry to Treasury Secretary Bessent about plans to support taxpayers and reduce costs.

Later that day at 18:07 UTC, Hoyer continued this discourse by questioning whether Trump's policies have led to an economic recession. He tweeted his dissatisfaction with the response from Trump’s Treasury Secretary: "I asked Trump’s Treasury Secretary whether Trump’s policies have pushed us into a recession." According to Hoyer, the answer did little to alleviate public anxiety over perceived economic instability emanating from White House decisions.

Steny Hoyer has served in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, he holds degrees from both University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
