Steny Hoyer, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland's 5th district, shared several thoughts and reflections on significant historical events and educational initiatives through his social media posts.
On December 6, 2024, Hoyer marked the anniversary of the Thirteenth Amendment's ratification by highlighting its importance in American history. He stated, "159 years ago, the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified to abolish slavery in this country. This was the first step in the long march toward democracy, justice, & freedom for all. We must remain committed to learning from our history and continue the work to build a better America."
Later that day, he praised local educational institutions for their efforts in addressing hate crimes. On December 6, 2024, he expressed his commendation by saying, "I commend @UofMaryland and @BowieState for offering a course inspired by the life of Lt. Richard Collins III to examine hate crimes and how to prevent them. We must continue to ensure our institutions of higher education are welcoming and safe for all."
The following day on December 7, 2024, Hoyer reflected on Pearl Harbor Day with a tribute to those who lost their lives during the attack. He stated, "Today I join to remember over 2,400 Americans who lost their lives in the attack at Pearl Harbor 83 years ago, a day that continues to live in infamy. Every day, we must honor their bravery and remain committed to the servicemembers who defend our country & protect democracy."
